In environments where instruments are likely to be significantly exposed to sea/salt water (corrosive), sand/dust (abrasive), or icing/cold conditions, it may be preferable that the new
Severe Environment ("/SE") versions of our instruments be used in order that best performance and reliability is obtained in service.
The
/SE Option, available for the A100 Series Anemometers (available for W200P Series Windvanes soon) incorporates the /HE-4 anti-icing heater, a revised close-fitting anemometer top-seal, and a new R30 rotor variant with black cups and a number of other features to improve operation in severe conditions white maintaining First Class performance.

The "standard" A100 Series Anemometers (without the /SE option) do have adequate protection against rain and spray for many applications however. For example: In many offshore Wind Assessment applications the anemometers are often mounted high enough above the sea surface that salt spray and salt water ingress is not a serious problem, so the standard A100 series anemometer will usually perform well. The "standard" A100 Series Anemometers have been used successfully in many Offshore assessment campaigns.
Note that the older marine ("/WR") versions of our instruments are not designed for "high accuracy" applications such as Wind Assessment. Because special/different parts are fitted in the older marine ("/WR") versions, it means that those older anemometer versions are NOT First Class instruments. For applications requiring "First Class" performance (wind assessment etc), "marine" /WR versions of anemometers are NOT recommended (because the older /WR versions are NOT First Class, and the optional /WR touching-seal can degrade accuracy/sensitivity when fitted).
Our unique
self-referencing windvanes are ideal for use on tethered or free-drifting buoys at sea for general weather monitoring and collection of data to assist forecasting. Because of it's negligible power consumption, our
switching anemometer is also popular for these applications.
Marine versions of our instruments are ideal for use at ports or on larger vessels.
